I once drove 1050 mile straight in an Explorer that was running on 5 cylinders, that was terrible I feel your pain.

As I started to scroll down to the beginning of your post I saw the rocks as being the mountains from the beginning of M*A*S*H, and the song ‘ Suicide Is Painless ’ popped into my head, a thought that crops up during those long family road trips...

Ugh my worst ever was 300 miles in a Montero with a leaky radiator and hose and funnel zip tied up from th coolant reservoir to the passenger window where I was sitting armed with several gallon jugs of water. Every time the temps climbed my buddy who was driving called out I poured some water in the funnnel. On the NY Thruway at like 70 MPH. Oh and this was in August with no AC.

Thanks. Just switched seats with my wife. She is going to try to do the rest of the way in.

That might be worse.

I had just gotten the explorer back from the dealer and then 2 days later, the check engine light comes on and it starts shaking. I was like fuck this, I’m driving back to the parents house soon, so I’ll look at it then. So I drive for a month like this. After that 1050 mile trip, I’m back at my parents house. I pop the hood and my dad is like do you see something wrong, apparently the wire going from the coil to the spark plug in cylinder 1 had come undone. Plug it back in and clear the code and it ran perfectly. I was kinda mad at myself for not even popping the hood.

Dang the worst is when you find out something that’s been wrong for a while was a simple fix. I think yours is probably worse just due to the distance.

Yeah, it was one of those things where I really didn’t have a place to work on the car and I didn’t trust the dealer. So my crankshaft position sensor had gone bad and they changed that, and I guess they disconnected some wires while they were trouble shooting and didn’t correctly reconnect them.

1,000 in a day isn’t too bad, at least you are going aero and don’t have any bikes or cargo boxes on the car.

Yeah I’ve seen a couple things on the road that must be shaking like crazy with th the bricks they’ve lashed to the top.

Lucky guy. My wife rarely offers to drive. Now that my daughter has started driving, I have someone willing to take a turn, but it’s still stressful since she’s inexperienced.

I have a Thule box but you know it’s there over 70 or so.

Yep. I don’t have one but used to ski with a buddy that had a Thule aero ski box on an Impreza and we had to keep the speed about 70 max or noise levels and fuel economy went to crap.

I’ve done the trip a few times solo, but my wife almost always offers. I can’t even imagine the stress on a long road trip with a new driver. My daughter is still a long ways off. We passed an Pilot that was driving a little erratically - fast then slow to pass, going into the left lane to pass then ducking back into the right lane. When we finally got by them it looked like a teenage girl driving with a dad looking nervous in the passenger seat and mom and brother in back.

It’s 10 hours to my mom’s house, 12 with my wife and kids. When she passed earlier this year, the return trip includedmy son riding with me in a moving van pulling a car hauler and my daughter riding with my wife in her Explorer pulling a small trailer with a lawn tractor. The normally 12 hour trip was taking a lot longer than usual. My wife got tired and my daughter took over. Then night fell and it started raining. She drove for several hours like that without issue or complaint. I, however, was pretty nervous about it.

Was any of that rain in LA? I got stuck in a downpour near Lake Charles on IH10 one time and it was about the scariest weather I’ve ever driven in.

On that trip, it was ALL in Louisiana. We get loads of rain here. The river I posted earlier was flooded just last week.

oof, thats a lot of miles in one shot. At least you you have a copilot.

My wife and I road tripped for our honeymoon. Houston>Mobile>Orlando>Miami>Mobile>Houston. I had to drive all of it since my wife didn’t have enough practice on manual to feel comfortable driving long distance. To be fair I really didn’t mind, the drive was a lot of fun, despite having to drive through a lot of rain on the way there. I think the key was having enthralling audiobooks to listen to, I think it would’ve been a lot more exhausting otherwise.
